Last weekend we welcomed Melón Jiménez and Lara Wong to our series. They hit the stage at StoneCropAcres Winery + Vineyard. It was a gorgeous night, almost surreal.
Melón and Lara performed for a solid 90-minutes and garnered not one, not two, but three standing ovations and cheers of “BRAVO.” They caught the audience’s attention on the first note and had them until the last.
Some of the comments:
- “Thank you, Harmony Concerts, for broadening our horizons to music that we didn’t know we liked.”
- “OMG what a night, what a duo”
- “It was ethereal”
- “a quick note to say how much XXX and I enjoyed the concert tonight. One of our favourites, so talented, so in sync and amazing audience connection.”
- “Let’s do that again and again”
- “The only word I can think of is exquisite”
- “speechless, in a great way”
We put together a little compilation video of the evening. Even the birds were singing along, you can hear them loud and clear.
What should you know about Melón and Lara?
To start, if you see them performing in your area, get a ticket and go!
Lara Wong has been praised for her unique sound, musicality, and incredible versatility, flutist and bansuri player. She is a groundbreaking flutist in the world music scene. Lara’s musical journey began in the classical world and she earned her degree in classical and jazz flute at McGill University in Montreal. During her university years she began to dedicate herself to flamenco and upon graduating, she went to the south of Spain to study flamenco.
Guitarist Melón Jiménez has made plenty of music, not only in flamenco music but in many related styles. He is both devoted to the tradition of his Andalusian gypsy roots and also, to the innovation of the flamenco guitar, meticulously translating techniques from the sitar, slide guitar, and African gimbri to his guitar. Having grown up between Madrid and Jerez de la Frontera (the cradle of flamenco in Andalucia), Melón began to play the guitar at age 3, following in the footsteps of his father Miguel Jiménez. Melón’s professional career started very early on. At the young age of 15, he became flamenco pop star Niña Pastori's official guitarist.
Together Melón and Lara create a fusion of sounds by bring unexpected protagonists—the Indian bansuri flute and the flamenco guitar—to reimagine flamenco’s evolution from its Indian and African roots.
We are so happy they made a stop in our boutique series while in Canada. They make their way to a few places before returning to Spain.
